About Cyprus Museum, Nicosia

When your resident American Ambassador begins to cart off your nation’s heritage in the thousands, like Luigi Plama di Cesnola did with Cyprus’, then it’s high time to get your own museum. Now, despite fourteen exhibition halls in which Cypriot artefacts are chronologically and thematically displayed, the collection has become so large that the only a small percentage of it is non display at any given moment. A lot of the current excavated items tend to go to the local district museums because of the lack of space. As for the items themselves, it’s all pottery and coins and statues and gold. They have a magnificent Greek-Roman pottery collection.

Cyprus Museum, Nicosia Reviews

  • Excellent Cyprus Archaeological Museum Tour which is on Tuesdays and Fridays starting at 11am. The guide gave an in depth overview and history of civilization on the island from prehistoric times to the early Christian period showing pottery, jewelry, sculpture and coins from the Neolithic period to the Bronze Age, Iron Age and the Greco-Roman period. Must see while in Nicosia.

  • Good for. someone who would like. to start a podcast that would tell the history of the island!

  • Amazing artifact, some very well exposed and commented. Definitively worth a visit

  • Amazing collection of artefacts - an entire terracotta army discovered (we all know about the Chinese one); giant bronzes; marble statuary ... this really is a must - see museum. A pity it is not more widely known about.

  • Interesting visit. Lasts about an hour.
