Located near Mt. Hiei, the Shugakuin Imperial Villa and its gardens are spread across an area of a whopping 135 acres. Completed in the year 1659, this imperial villa was built as a retirement home for Emperor Gomizuno-o. Showcasing Japanese style of architecture, the gardens of the villa, replete with ponds, waterfalls and moss gardens, are celebrated for implementing Japanese gardening techniques. The beauty of the entire property has to be seen to be believed.

• Entry is by guided tour only.
• Tours are in Japanese only. However, an English audio guide can be rented.
• Photography is allowed only from a few designated spots.
• You need to apply at the Imperial Household Agency's office in Kyoto Imperial Park to book a guided tour. It is compulsory to show your passport as identity proof while booking the tour. Don’t forget to carry it.
• Booking a tour in advance is recommended.

• Guided tours of the Shugakuin Imperial Villa are held five times daily at 9 am, 10 am, 11 am, 1:30 pm and 3 pm.  
• No tours are held on Sundays and national holidays. Please check the official website for the schedules.
• The Imperial Household Agency’s office is open from Monday to Friday from 8:45 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 5 pm.
